WRITTEN BY A LIFE DIETICIAN

Diabetes Diet
what actually changes on the plate.

The order you eat in changes the reading

Eating vegetables and protein before the rice or roti, rather than after, produces a lower rise in blood sugar from the same meal. It costs nothing, changes nothing about what your family cooks, and is one of the first things a dietician will ask you to try.

The second change is usually spreading carbohydrate across the day instead of loading it into one large lunch, which is how most Telugu households eat.

Rice, and the honest version of the advice

You will be told by relatives to stop rice entirely. Most people cannot, and the ones who try usually return to it within weeks with a larger portion than before.

A workable plan fixes the serving, pairs it with dal, curd and a real vegetable portion, and looks at what you eat around it. Millets and brown rice help some people, but a large quantity of millet is still a large quantity of carbohydrate.

Medicines change the plan

Metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin and the newer injectables each interact with meal timing differently. A plan that ignores which tablet you take and when can leave you with low sugars or with readings that make no sense.

This is the single strongest reason to have a plan built by someone who reads your prescription rather than downloading a chart.

Hidden sugar, and the drinks nobody counts

Four cups of sweet tea or coffee a day, packaged juices, sweetened curd drinks and the sugar in ready-made masalas add up quietly. So do fruit portions eaten as juice rather than whole.

Festival weeks are planned for rather than treated as failures — which sweet, how much, at what time, and what the rest of that day looks like.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What people ask
about this diet.

01Can I eat rice if I have diabetes?+

In most plans, yes. The portion, what shares the plate and the order you eat in matter more than removing rice completely.

02Are millets better than rice for sugar?+

They can help, mainly because of fibre and slower digestion, but a large quantity of millet is still a large quantity of carbohydrate. Portion still decides the result.

03Is fruit allowed?+

Whole fruit in measured portions is usually fine and useful. Juice is the problem, because the fibre is gone and the sugar arrives quickly.

04Will diet let me stop my tablets?+

Any change to medication is your doctor's decision, based on your readings. Some people do reduce doses over time; nobody should stop a tablet because of a diet plan.

Responsible clinical guidance

Do not change diabetes medicines based on diet advice alone. Medication decisions belong to the treating medical professional.
