WRITTEN BY A LIFE DIETICIAN
Post-Delivery Diet
what actually changes on the plate.
Feeding, sleep and why hunger is enormous
Breastfeeding raises energy and fluid needs substantially, and broken sleep pushes hunger hormones in the same direction. Feeling hungry all the time after delivery is normal physiology, not a lack of discipline.
Cutting food sharply while feeding tends to reduce energy and milk supply before it reduces weight, which is why the plan starts with structure rather than restriction.
The traditional postnatal foods, sorted
Many customary practices are genuinely useful: warm, easily digested food, ghee in reasonable amounts, methi and ajwain preparations, and rest. Others are not, particularly long lists of banned vegetables and fluid restriction, which do more harm than good.
The dietician's job is to keep what helps, drop what does not, and avoid an argument with the family by explaining why.
Iron, calcium and the deficiencies that follow delivery
Blood loss at delivery, months of feeding and interrupted eating leave many mothers low in iron, vitamin D, B12 and calcium. That shows up as exhaustion and hair fall, both of which are then blamed on the baby's routine.
Testing and correcting these is often the change that makes the biggest difference to how you feel.
The tummy takes longer than the weight
A post-delivery tummy is usually a mix of fat, stretched skin, a weak core and in many women separation of the abdominal muscles. Diet addresses one part of that. Core work in the right order and, in some cases, in-clinic support address the rest.
Anyone promising the pre-pregnancy body back through diet alone is not describing what actually happens.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What people ask
about this diet.
01Will dieting reduce my milk supply?+
Sharp restriction can. A structured plan with adequate energy, protein and fluid usually supports supply while weight comes down gradually.
02When can I start after delivery?+
Gentle nutrition structure can start early; anything more active waits for your obstetrician's clearance, particularly after a caesarean.
03Do I have to avoid all vegetables and cold foods?+
No. Long avoidance lists reduce the nutrition you need most at this stage. Comfortable, warm, well-cooked food is sensible; blanket bans are not.
04Why is my hair falling so much?+
Post-delivery hair fall is common and largely hormonal, but low iron, vitamin D and protein make it worse and are worth testing for.
Postnatal nutrition should be coordinated with the obstetrician or physician when recovery, anaemia, diabetes or other medical concerns are present.
