WRITTEN BY A LIFE DIETICIAN

Heart & Cholesterol Diet
what actually changes on the plate.

Which number your doctor is actually watching

A lipid report has several numbers and they do not all carry equal weight. LDL is the one most treatment decisions turn on; triglycerides respond strongly to sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol; HDL moves mostly with activity and weight.

Knowing which of yours is out of range decides what changes first, which is why the plan starts from your report rather than from general heart-healthy advice.

Fats, replaced rather than removed

Very low-fat eating is not the current advice and tends to be replaced with more refined carbohydrate, which pushes triglycerides up. What helps is changing which fats dominate: less deep-fried and reused oil, less processed and fried snack food, more nuts, seeds, fish and everyday cooking oils used in measured quantity.

For Telugu and coastal households the frying method and the reuse of oil often matter more than the oil chosen.

Fibre, salt and blood pressure

Soluble fibre from dal, oats, vegetables and fruit has a real if modest effect on cholesterol, and it is easy to add to food people already eat.

Where blood pressure is part of the picture, salt review means pickle, papad, dried fish, packaged snacks and restaurant food rather than the salt shaker, which is a small share of the total.

Diet works with your medication, not instead of it

If a statin or other medication has been prescribed, food changes sit alongside it. Stopping medication because a diet is going well is a decision that belongs to your cardiologist or physician, based on repeat testing.

Family history matters too — some people have high cholesterol despite excellent eating, and that needs medical assessment rather than a stricter diet.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What people ask
about this diet.

01Should I stop eating eggs?+

For most people dietary cholesterol from eggs has a smaller effect on blood cholesterol than saturated and trans fats do. Whether eggs suit you depends on your full report.

02Is coconut oil good for the heart?+

It is high in saturated fat. It is not a health food, and swapping to it is not a cholesterol strategy.

03Can diet replace my statin?+

That is a decision for your doctor based on your risk and repeat blood tests, not something a diet plan should decide.

04How soon will my lipid report change?+

Repeat testing is usually meaningful after a couple of months of consistent change. Triglycerides often move fastest; LDL is slower and more stubborn.

Responsible clinical guidance

Nutrition supports cardiovascular care but does not replace medicines, cardiology advice or urgent evaluation of chest pain and other warning symptoms.
