WRITTEN BY A LIFE DIETICIAN

Kidney-Support Diet
what actually changes on the plate.

The stage decides everything

There is no single kidney diet. What is right depends on your eGFR and stage, whether you are on dialysis, your potassium, phosphorus and sodium results, your protein levels, and whether diabetes or blood pressure is driving the damage.

Advice that is correct for early-stage kidney disease can be dangerous later, and general diabetes advice can be actively wrong for a kidney patient. This is the condition where downloading a chart carries the most risk.

Protein: not simply more or less

Before dialysis, protein is often moderated to reduce the load on the kidneys. On dialysis, requirements usually go up rather than down because protein is lost during treatment.

The amount is set with your nephrologist from your reports. No responsible dietician sets a protein figure for a kidney patient without them.

Potassium, phosphorus and the foods people do not suspect

Where potassium is high, ordinary foods matter: banana, coconut water, potato, tomato, dals in quantity, and many fruits. Leaching and cooking methods can reduce potassium in vegetables, which lets more variety stay in the plan.

Phosphorus hides in packaged foods, colas and processed items as additives, which are absorbed far more completely than phosphorus in natural food.

Salt, fluid and swelling

Salt restriction is central for blood pressure and swelling, and again the source is pickle, papad, dried fish, packaged snacks and hotel food rather than the shaker.

Fluid limits, where they apply, are set by your nephrologist. A dietician works inside those limits rather than deciding them.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What people ask
about this diet.

01How much protein should I eat with kidney disease?+

It depends on your stage and whether you are on dialysis, and it is set from your reports with your nephrologist. A general figure from the internet is not safe here.

02Do I have to stop dal completely?+

Usually not. Quantity, frequency and cooking method are adjusted according to your potassium and protein results rather than banned outright.

03Is coconut water good for kidneys?+

It is high in potassium, which can be a serious problem in kidney disease. Check with your treating team before drinking it regularly.

04Can diet reverse kidney damage?+

No. Nutrition helps slow progression, manage symptoms and control the diabetes or blood pressure behind it, working alongside your nephrologist's treatment.

Responsible clinical guidance

Renal diets can be unsafe when copied without current reports. Treatment limits and supplements must follow the nephrologist’s advice.
